Gas Prices Driving People Insane

A San Francisco gas station lowered its price 50 cents below the local average. The result? People driving in from long distances and waiting for hours to save what amounted to 5 or 10 bucks.

Here’s a choice quote:

“Customer Avon Curtis also said it was well worth her 90 minutes in line for the $4 she saved filling up her Ford Focus, regardless of the fact that she was running late for work.

“I have to think smart. I’m a single parent, so I have to budget my money,” said Curtis, a San Francisco mother of six. ”

What is wrong with these people? After idling for hours in line and driving across town, what is their real savings? And even if these low prices were a short drive away, are the hours they waste in line not worth more the $5-10? What is it about gas prices that makes people go insane like this? Why do people become seemingly irrational when it comes to gas?

If people are willing to go through such extraordinary trouble to save a few bucks, why don’t they just walk or ride a bike more often? Or what if they lived in a place closer to work or near a bus line?
